September 10, 2021 - Surfside, FL
Demonstrating that fraudster depravity has no bounds, 3 people were arrested and accused of stealing the identities of victims of the June 2021 Champlain Towers South collapse in Surfside, FL. The fraudsters face multiple counts of identity theft, organized scheme to defraud, and trafficking in stolen credit cards. Authorities were alerted of fraudulent activity when the sister of one of the deceased victims noticed password changes to the victim’s bank accounts and credit cards, as well as newly created addresses and contact information. None of the new addresses were the residences of the identity thieves, as the group used a series of drop locations, a common tactic used in fraud schemes.
